精算師為了把未知事件帶來的情緒失落和財務損失降到最低，要對事件發生的機率和可能導致的後果進行評測。比如死亡，許多事件都是無法避免的。因此，採取措施讓事件發生時造成的財政衝擊減小是很有裨益的。這些風險會對資產負債單上的借貸雙方造成影響，因此，進行資產債務管理，具備評估技能都必不可缺。只有具備分析技能和商業知識，做到洞悉人類行為和信息系統的變幻莫測，才能設計和管理風險控制機制。
大部份的精算師都會於財產保險或人壽保險公司工作，工作範圍包括設計新品種的保險產品，計算有關產品之保費及所需的準備金，為保險公司作風險評估及制定投資方針，並定期作出檢討及跟進。
其餘的精算師主要在諮詢公司（主要的客戶是保險公司及銀行），退休金精算公司（計算企業財報需揭露的員工退休金負債及成本），養老金投資公司，醫療保險公司及投資公司工作。
要考取英國精算師資格，有兩種方法：
1. 成為準精算師會員Associate member：
-需要通過基礎技能課程9門
-需要通過基礎應用課程3門
-至少工作1年
-參加過專業技能課程
2. 成為精算師會員Fellow：
-需要通過基礎技能課程9門
-需要通過基礎應用課程3門
-需要通過專項技能課程2門（任選）
-需要通過專項應用課程1門（任選）
-至少工作3年
-參加過專業技能課程
而澳洲的精算專業考試可分為三個階段。第一階段是在澳洲大學修讀相關的精算學科，如金融、財務數學、經濟、機率與統計、保險等等；第二階段則是Actuarial Control Cycle，考生須在指定的大學參加相應的考試而取得學分；第三階段則須通過四項不同形式的考核和考試，可同時在相關行業一邊工作，一邊考試。完成前兩個階段，在取得兩年工作經驗後，可申請成為準精算師（AIAA）。具備三年以上相關工作經驗，透過參加職業化課程可取得精算師資格；要取得終極FIAA澳洲精算學會院士尚要在第三階段修讀專業課程和完成四項考核。
