    Academic Scholarships
Candidates sit an examination with questions devised to test ability and potential rather than achievements alone, and differences in syllabuses are taken into account. A current Headteacher’s report is also taken into consideration.

    Art Scholarships
Awards are made on the results of a girl’s portfolio plus a practical test in June where she will be required to discuss her work and sit an observational drawing test. A current Headteacher’s report is also taken into consideration.

    Sports Scholarships
Pupils are invited to take part in an assessment day in March which involves an interview, plus a fitness and skills test.

    Music Scholarships
Candidates usually offer two instruments (which may include voice) and should be working towards Grade 5 or higher on their principal instrument at 11+ or 12+, Grade 6 for 13+ and Grade 8 for 16+. Grade 5 theory is desirable but not essential at all entry points. Awards are made on the basis of audition and interview. Emphasis is placed on a girl’s ability to be an active member of the Department as well as musical ability and enthusiasm.

    Drama Scholarships
Both external and internal candidates are invited to an assessment day at 13+ entailing an interview, audition and 40 minute written paper based on their experience of live theatre. Two weeks will be given to prepare audition material for the assessment. At 16+ girls can
self-nominate for the prestigious Geraldine James Drama Award which gives access to an extensive performance based enrichment programme.

    Headmistress’s Award
There is also the possibility of a Headmistress’s Award to reward an outstanding all-round performer at Common Entrance. Each candidate should provide a portfolio detailing the contribution she has made to the life of her current school and how she would make contributions
to the life of Downe House, a CV of her life and interests, plus copies of certificates, awards and a supporting reference from her current Headteacher, to be submitted after the Easter holiday.

    Multiple Award Applicants
From time to time candidates may be assessed across a number of areas. If successful in more than one category, your daughter will need to choose one Major Scholars’ Programme to follow and will follow a Minor Scholars’ Programme in her other fields of excellence.
This will ensure that she does not spread herself too thinly. A maximum of three awards will be given to any one candidate.
