鑑於建築學專業是綜合工程科學和人文設計的特殊學科，所以申請起來就會麻煩一些，要求比其他學科複雜，需要學生提供的準備材料也會更多。
建築學專業學生主要學習建築設計、城市規劃原理、建築工程技術、環境和空間表現、繪畫藝術等方面的基本理論與基本知識，受到建築設計等方面的基本訓練，具有項目策劃、建築設計方案和建築施工圖繪製等方面的基本能力。
建築學的畢業生具備建築設計、城市設計、室內設計、市政設計等方面的知識和專業技能，能在設計部門從事各項設計工作，在房地產部門從事建築策劃與管理工作，並具有多種職業適應能力的通用型、複合型高級工程技術人才。
英國皇家建築師Royal Institute of British Architecture（RIBA）資格認證共分為三個部分：
第一部分就是經過三年制建築學本科畢業，被RIBA授權的Architecture學位可以免考資格證書，畢業後自動拿到RIBA Part1的資格認證，第二部分是拿到一個建築學本科的學士學位之外，學生要升讀2年制建築學碩士，之後經過一年的實習，可以拿到RIBA Part2的資格認證，大概需時兩年到三年左右。第三部分是取得Part2後，工作1-2年才能通過RIBA Part3的資格認證，這就相當於註冊建築師。
澳洲的入學要求嚴格，就讀時間長，一般時間要5-6年，學生必須完成學士學位及碩士學位，通過2年的實踐培訓，具備以上條件，同時通過澳洲建築師協會AACA的建築實踐考試(APE)，就基本完成了AACA的評估程序，具備了成為建築師的資本資格，只要在所在州進行登記，就可以開始以建築師的身份工作。
